Burmese security forces opened fire on the mourning crowd at the funeral of one of the 114 victims yesterday, the bloodiest day of protest since the February 1 military coup. The shooting took place in the city of Bago, near Yangon. “While we were singing the song of the revolution, the security forces came and fired, we ran away,” said a woman named Aye.
Instead, two people were killed today during protests in several other cities in Burma in the aftermath of yesterday’s harsh repression, the worst since the coup which the army ousted the democratically elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi (who is at the arrests since). Among the victims are also children, one 5 years old and one 13 years old, according to local media. The bloodshed came on the annual day that celebrates the Burmese army. In view of the protests, on Friday evening the state TV MRTV had launched a threat to young people, at the forefront of the protests, warning them of the risk of receiving shots in the head or in the back, as had already happened to many killed during the demonstrations. Unanimous condemnation of the international community which asked the military junta to stop the massacre.
