Latin American Presidents Condemn Ecuador’s Attack on Mexican Diplomatic Headquarters

During a virtual summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) held yesterday, Latin American presidents strongly criticized Ecuador for its recent attack on the Mexican diplomatic headquarters in Quito. The incident has not only sparked regional rejection but also garnered condemnation from the international community.

The meeting, convened by Honduras and chaired by President Xiomara Castro, saw several announcements with serious diplomatic implications. Venezuela announced the closure of its diplomatic headquarters in Ecuador and demanded the immediate return of its representatives in Quito and Guayaquil.

Venezuelan President Maduro expressed “absolute solidarity” with Mexican President López Obrador, stating that “Mexico is not alone, it has the voice of our America accompanying it in circumstances that you did not seek.” He condemned Ecuador’s actions as “an act of barbarism” that violated international law.

The virtual summit privately debated a proposed declaration condemning the assault on the Mexican embassy and imposing sanctions on Ecuador. Mexican President López Obrador called for countries to support Mexico by signing a complaint with the International Court of Justice to prevent such villainous actions in the future.

President Daniel Noboa of Ecuador, who was represented by Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld, was notably absent from the meeting. In response to the crisis, some presidents called for restoring the asylum status of former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas and providing him with safe passage out of the country.

The situation has caused unrest not only in the region but globally, prompting calls for justice and accountability. The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, emphasized the need to address the violation of diplomatic norms and ensure that such barbarism does not infiltrate the region.

The incident stems from the arrest of Jorge Glas, who sought asylum in the Mexican embassy amid corruption allegations. President Noboa has defended Ecuador’s actions, arguing that Mexico first breached diplomatic norms by granting asylum to an individual facing serious corruption charges.

As the crisis unfolds, Latin American leaders are working to resolve the diplomatic standoff and uphold international law. The fate of Ecuador-Mexico relations hangs in the balance as regional and global support for Mexico grows stronger.
