Cop26, Putin will not go to the climate summit

The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, will not participate in the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow. This was announced by the spokesman of the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov, according to international media reports.

“Unfortunately Putin will not go to Glasgow”, Peskov said, without giving reasons for the decision, adding however that climate change is “one of our most important foreign policy priorities”.

A setback for Britain’s hopes of convincing world leaders to agree on a meaningful climate deal. The 26th UN Climate Change Conference, or COP26, will be held in Glasgow from 31 October to 12 November and Britain is seeking the support of major powers for a more radical plan to tackle climate change.

The Kremlin said on Tuesday that Putin will not attend the G20 summit in Rome in person this month due to concerns about the pandemic in Russia having a new peak. The Russian leader will participate via video link.
