Crazy turnaround: Jannik Sinner won the Australian Open

Jannik Sinner – Daniil Medvedev: 3-2 (3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3)

Ahead of Sunday’s final in Melbourne, the 22-year-old from northern Italy was compared to Roger Federer, who won his first Grand Slam in his 17th tournament.

That feat was copied by Jannik Sinner, who entered his very first Grand Slam final as the clear favorite among the bookies after outrunning Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals – and ended up winning the match in five sets after getting off to a nightmare start.

Third final loss in Melbourne

For it looked as if opponent Daniil Medvedev would finally get the title after losing the final in Melbourne twice before; first to Novak Djokovic in 2021 and then to Rafael Nadal the following year.

The Russian played almost perfectly in the first two sets and was two games away from the title in the third set at 4-4 when the turnaround began.

Sinner broke in the third set when Medvedev served at 4-5. Then followed two tough sets which the Italian won 6-4, 6-3.

After 3 hours and 46 minutes, the turnaround was complete.

Jannik Sinner is now a member of the exclusive club of players who have won Grand Slams.
