Bisnis.com, JAKARTA — The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said an earthquake in the northeast of Tuban with a magnitude of 6.0 caused minor damage in the Gresik and Tuban areas.
Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, said that based on the Tuban Regency BPBD report, one house unit was damaged in the kitchen area. Lindu, which was followed by 16 aftershocks, also destroyed one unit of the village hall building.
“In another place, the earthquake which also rocked Gresik, caused damage to 1 hospital mosque unit in the Bawean Islands, Gresik Regency,” said Muhari in a written statement Friday (22/3/2024) afternoon.

According to him, until the press release was released, there were no casualties after the incident. However, BPBD Tuban, Rembang and Gresik continue to monitor and collect data on the impact of the earthquake that occurred to ensure conditions and further treatment.
“BNPB appeals to the public to remain calm and not be influenced by issues whose truth cannot be justified. To avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged due to the earthquake and to monitor the latest information from authorized agencies such as BNPB, BMKG, and local regional governments to avoid misinformation ,” he said further.
An earthquake measuring M6.0 rocked Tuban Regency, East Java, on Friday (22/3) afternoon at 11.22 WIB. This earthquake was centered in the sea with an epicenter of 5.74 South Latitude and 112.32 East Longitude with a depth of 10 km.
Based on the BNPB Control and Operations Center (Pusdalops) report, the earthquake was recorded at a location 132 km northeast of Tuban-Jatim, 152 km northeast of Rembang-Central Java, 153 km northwest of Lamongan-Jatim, and 175 km northwest of Surabaya-Jatim.
The earthquake shaking was felt moderately in Tuban Regency with a duration of approximately 15 seconds. Apart from Tuban, shaking was also felt in other areas, such as Rembang Regency, with a duration of approximately 5 to 20 seconds.
The earthquake also caused people to panic and carry out independent evacuations from their homes. It was also reported that most of the patients at the Nahdlatul Ulama Hospital in Tuban had to be evacuated to the hospital grounds as a form of preparedness.
Based on analysis from BMKG, taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a shallow type of earthquake due to active fault activity in the Java Sea. The results of the source mechanism analysis show that the earthquake has a shear movement mechanism (strike-slip). This earthquake was also followed by 16 aftershocks with fluctuating shaking strength ranging from 4.4 SR to 3.5 SR.
