Karmøy has the rare era of being partly the birthplace of the Norwegian Nobel Prize winner in literature 2023, Jon Fosse. Fosse actually offered time at Torvastad. In the first months after he was born, he and his mother lived with his mother’s sister in Torvastad, and they were often there with his grandparents in Vikjo in the years before Fosse started school in Strandebarm in Hardanger.

It is not everyday that a Nobel Prize winner has such a connection to Karmøy.

In the municipal council meeting on 13 May, Karmøy SV asks the municipal director to look into the possibility of mounting a blue plaque on the place where the Nobel Prize winner in literature Jon Fosse grew up in Torvastad (see picture). Blue plaques are the name for signs mounted on buildings or structures to honor historical events or prominent people connected to the city.

A blue plaque at Torvastad will be able to convey important historical aspects of our municipality to both residents and visitors, and increase interest in the municipality’s history and cultural heritage and promote tourism and educational school initiatives linked to the municipality’s historical personalities.
