VfL Osnabrück’s negative run in the 2nd Bundesliga continues. The Lower Saxony team lost 1:3 (0:3) in the promotion duel at SV Elversberg on Sunday and are still waiting for their second win of the season.

Recently, VfL had stabilized somewhat under coach Uwe Koschinat and had three draws in a row. But in Elversberg the game was practically decided after 45 minutes. At least the Lower Saxony team showed morale despite the significant half-time deficit, but nothing more than Maxwell Gyamfi’s goal was achieved.

After the deserved defeat in Saarland, direct relegation is getting closer and closer. They are already ten points behind the relegation place and eleven behind the saving bank. In addition, the next VfL tasks are tough: next Saturday (1 p.m., NDR Livecenter) they will be playing fourth-placed Hannover 96 at home in Bremer Brücke, and a week later the Lower Saxony team will be visiting third-placed HSV.

Delay due to broken network and fan protests

Because the safety net in front of the visitors’ block was damaged, the kick-off was delayed by almost a quarter of an hour. As soon as it started, referee Patrick Schwengers interrupted again for about four minutes – numerous tennis balls had flown onto the court, the fans protesting against the planned investor entry into the DFL.

VfL defense was only safe for half an hour

The hosts got off to a better start and put the Osnbrückers under pressure early on. However, the Saarlanders were initially unable to capitalize on their playful preponderance; the purple-whites’ defense stood well for a long time.

After just over half an hour, an SVE double strike disillusioned the guests: first Manuel Feil scored with a header (36th), then Hugo Vandermersch increased the score to 2-0 with a powerful shot from a half-right position (38th). Jannik Rochelt had the chance to make it 3-0 two minutes later, but only hit the ball against the crossbar (40′).

The home team’s third goal was only postponed. Immediately before the half-time whistle, Rochelt again only hit the aluminum, but Paul Wanner hammered the rebound into the net (45th + 5th). Until then, Osnabrück had not had a single significant chance to score.

Gyamfi scores, Elversberg has a huge chance

Koschinat seemed to have found the right words during the break, because suddenly VfL was present offensively: Erik Engelhardt failed with a direct pass from Elversberg keeper Nicolas Kristof (48th). Shortly afterwards, the 24-year-old was beaten: After Noel Niemann’s crossbar crash, Gyamfi made it 1-3 (52′).

Now it was a completely different game – Osnabrück fought for every ball and pressed for the goal. At the same time, Elversberg missed numerous chances to score the fourth goal: Luca Schnellbacher headed past once (56′) and was denied twice by VfL keeper Philipp Kühn (59′, 64′). Thore Jacobsen’s shot flew just over the goal (87′).

The efforts of Lower Saxony could not be denied, but the hosts didn’t let anything go wrong and managed to win over time. While the SVE with 32 points in ninth place in the table can almost close the gap on staying in the league, VfL is facing difficult times.
