Delta Strain Spreads Australia’s “City Lockdown” Expands
The South Australian state government of Australia announced on the 20th a “city closure” measure to curb the spread of the delta strain of the new crown mutant virus. According to Reuters, South Australia announced that it will “close the city” for 7 days starting from the evening of the 20th. The reason is that 5 cases of new crown infection with the Delta strain have been confirmed.
Victoria was originally scheduled to end the five-day “lockdown” that night, but Governor Daniel Andrews announced an extension of seven days to prevent the rapid spread of the Delta strain.
“The speed of the (Delta strain) spread in Victorian communities proves that the closure of the city is done right.” Andrews said that there are still many unknown transmission chains that have not been controlled. If the closure is unblocked, the epidemic may spread rapidly.
Reuters reported that Victoria has more than 80 confirmed cases of cluster infection in this round. The first batch of cases was confirmed last week and was linked to a group of infected furniture movers from Sydney.
Sydney discovered the first case of the current round of the epidemic on June 16. The city began to be “closed” on June 26, and it was extended several times since then.
