China News Service, November 16, According to a report by Al Jazeera’s Chinese network in Qatar, India signed a contract with Russia in 2018 to purchase 5 sets of S-400 air defense missile systems, estimated to be worth more than 5 billion US dollars. A few days ago, the Russian Federal Military Technical Cooperation Agency announced that Russia has begun to deliver this system to India.
According to comprehensive media reports, Dmitry Shugaev, director of the Russian Federal Military Technical Cooperation Agency, issued a statement saying that the equipment for the S-400 air defense missile system has already begun to be delivered to India, and the delivery process will proceed according to the specified date.
According to reports, the S-400 system is a new generation of medium- and long-range air defense missile systems designed to destroy strategic and tactical aircraft and ballistic missiles.
India is the third “buyer” of Russian missile systems. The report pointed out that the move “angered the United States,” and the United States threatened that if India does not withdraw the deal, the United States will impose sanctions on it. In 2020, the United States imposed sanctions on Turkey after purchasing the S-400 system in Turkey.
In March 2021, when US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin visited the Indian capital of New Delhi, he called on his ally India not to purchase Russian equipment to avoid sanctions by US law.
Austin said at the time that because India had not received any Russian anti-aircraft missile systems, it had not discussed the possibility of imposing sanctions.
According to reports, among India’s weapons suppliers, the United States is among the best. U.S. defense companies have signed agreements worth billions of dollars to supply India with military equipment, including helicopters. As part of the modernization of the armed forces, India plans to invest approximately US$250 billion in this.
Despite this, Russia is still India’s largest supplier of weapons. In 2018, the S-400 missile system deal signed between Indian Prime Minister Modi and Russian President Putin strengthened Russia’s position.Return to Sohu to see more
