Heavy Rains Cause Devastation in Southern Brazil, Hundreds Dead
Sao Paulo, May 9th – Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in southern Brazil, turning many areas into isolated islands and resulting in the deaths of hundreds of people.
The recent floods, landslides, and river backflow in Rio Grande do Sul have caused immense destruction and loss of life. Many Chinese businessmen, like Deng Li from Taishan, Guangzhou, have been severely impacted. Deng Li invested her savings in a retail store in Porto Alegre, which is now submerged in muddy water.
The Civil Protection Department of Rio Grande do Sul reported that 100 people have died, 128 are missing, and 372 have been injured. Over 1.4 million people have been affected in 417 out of the state’s 497 cities.
Despite three days of sunshine, waterlogging persists in many areas, with the water levels in Porto Alegre surpassing 5.4 meters. Residents have been without water and power for over a week, leading to long lines at supermarkets for essential supplies.
The devastation has halted transportation, with the closure of Porto Alegre Airport until May 30 and major highways like BR-386 rendered impassable. Chinese company employees have faced arduous journeys to reach Sao Paulo for international flights, enduring long hours of travel and witnessing the destruction of pastoral landscapes.
Rio Grande do Sul, known as Brazil’s “Granary,” produces 70% of the country’s rice. With 1.6 million tons of rice yet to be harvested, the Brazilian government plans to import rice to stabilize prices. The tobacco industry, centered in Santa Cruz del Sur, has also been severely impacted, leading to suspensions in production.
China Tobacco International Brazil Co., Ltd. has faced challenges ensuring the safety of its employees, with many stranded due to road damage. The company’s head, Zhou Xinghua, highlighted the difficulties faced in logistics and transportation, impacting the peak production season.
The heavy rains in southern Brazil have had far-reaching consequences, affecting businesses, agriculture, and the livelihoods of many. The road to recovery will be long and challenging for the communities affected by this natural disaster.
