Europa League, round of 16
Karabagh Agdam – Bayer Leverkusen
The most important thing in brief: Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen remained undefeated in their 35th competitive game of the season. Thanks to a late goal from Patrik Schick (90th minute+2), Bayer managed a flattering 2-2 (0-2) draw at Karabakh Agdam in Azerbaijan in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16 on Thursday.
Coach Xabi Alonso rested numerous stars after the long journey to the Caucasus in view of the strain in the coming weeks. Agdam took advantage of this with goals from Yassine Benzia (26th) and Juninho (45th + 2). However, Leverkusen’s 100th competitive goal of the season by Wirtz (70th), who came on as a substitute twelve minutes earlier, and Schick’s late equalizer give hope for the second leg on Thursday in Leverkusen.

It’s a strange European Cup game: Bayer Leverkusen has to play in Azerbaijan on Asian soil, with a three-hour time difference. But Bayer already knows the whole thing.
Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen are the clear favorites going into the first leg of the round of 16 of the Europa League at Karabakh Agdam on Thursday (6.45 p.m., RTL+). Leverkusen have already played against the club from Azerbaijan in the group stage, winning 5-1 at home and 1-0 in Baku. Bayer was the only club in the competition to make it through the group phase with six wins in six games.
However, Agdam won three of the other four games and prevailed against Sporting Braga from Portugal in the play-offs, which Leverkusen escaped as group winners. The Bundesliga club also has an almost six-hour flight with a three-hour time difference waiting for them. Bayer has now been unbeaten in all competitions for 34 competitive games right from the start. The first goal in Baku on Thursday would be the Werkself’s 100th goal of the season across all competitions.
