Problems on Facebook and Instagram generated a spike in user complaints this Tuesday afternoon (5). On the Downdetector website, which compiles alerts for page and application failures, notifications stopped at around 12pm.

Facebook registered more than 28 thousand complaints on the platform, while Instagram had 21 thousand. Before 12pm, none had been made.

The situation returned to normal around 2pm.

On social media, users from the United States and the United Kingdom also reported that the applications had gone offline, indicating global instability.

When contacted, Meta, the holding company that controls Instagram and Facebook, did not respond until the publication of this text.

But, at X, formerly Twitter, the company’s head of communications, Andy Stone, stated that technical problems made it difficult for users to access the platforms. “We have resolved this as quickly as possible for everyone affected and apologize for any inconvenience,” he wrote.

The instability of Meta’s services led to the terms Instagram, Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg and the hashtag #instagramdown being trending topics on X. Altogether, there were more than 203 thousand tweets published about the unavailability of social networks this Tuesday.

Elon Musk, CEO of X, poked fun at the competing company in a post online. “If you’re reading this, it’s because our servers are working,” he wrote.

The technical problems also generated memes among X users.
