Fire in Copenhagen, the old stock exchange building burns: the tower with the Dragoons collapses

The Copenhagen stock market collapsed this morning following a fire. One of the symbolic buildings of the Danish capital was destroyed by the flames, which broke out around 8 in the morning. About an hour later, the tower with the Dragoons above it collapsed, destroying the building, in a roar that left everyone who witnessed it shocked. Dozens of men and fire engines intervened on site, together with the army. Hundreds of Danes, shocked by what happened, gathered near the fire. The Parliament and government of the Scandinavian country, which are located one hundred meters away from the stock exchange, were also evacuated. It is not yet clear what the causes of the fire were. Many Danish politicians took to social media with messages of condolence, mourning the destruction of one of the oldest and most important buildings in the Kingdom. Even following the collapse, the flames have not yet been put out. They are clearly visible as they languish inside the complex. The stock exchange had been undergoing a major renovation process for months, and is still surrounded by barriers. Meanwhile, a huge column of black smoke rises from the complex, with firefighters trying to control it with water cannons.

The stock exchange – “Borsen” in Danish – had been built in the mid-1600s by Christian IV of Denmark, one of the most important kings in Danish history who had initiated a massive package of public works to raise the coat of arms of his kingdom’s capital it is located in the center, on the island of Christiansborg.
