A fire in a factory next to St Mary’s Stadium caused the postponement of the match between Southampton and Preston North End, valid for the 36th round of the Championship (English second division). A fire in the factory that neighbors the stadium resulted in the Saints’ home being filled with smoke.

Hours before the game, the stadium had to be evacuated due to the toxicity of the smoke from the fire. The city’s emergency service was called by residents who live around the stadium and access roads were closed.

Southampton announced that the match would be postponed later this Wednesday morning. Where it stated that “The decision was taken after consultation with local authorities and emergency services, after a large fire occurred in a building close to St Mary’s Stadium, this morning.”- The club stated in a statement on social media.

The English Federation (FA) has not yet commented on when the match that would take place this Wednesday (6), at 4:45 pm, will take place.

In the context of the Championship, the match between Southampton and Preston North End is an important match. It would put two teams at the top of the table face to face, the Saints are fighting for one of the direct places in the Premier League, the team from the south coast of England occupies fourth place in the division with 70 points won, eight less than Ipswich Town, second placed. Preston North End is looking to qualify for the Playoffs, the Lilywhites occupy ninth place in the table with 53 points, four less than Hull City who are the first team in the Playoffs classification zone. With the postponement of the game, the two will have two games less than the other 22 teams competing in the Championship.
