Food and medicine delivered to the refuge of Andrea Cisternino, the Italian who takes care of dogs, cats and other animals in Ukraine

Andrea Cisternino’s Kj2 Italia shelter in Kiev, Ukraine, has finally received the aid that was blocked a few kilometers from his shelter. A nightmare has ended for the people who stayed with him to take care of dogs, cats, but also farm animals and horses: the man, who years ago founded the shelter for about 400 animals, with the outbreak of the war decided to do not abandon his guests. But soon the area around the shelter was occupied by the Russian army and since then it has been impossible to supply food and water for animals and people. While stocks were about to run out, Andrea launched an appeal that the ENPA immediately accepted.
“We immediately took action to respond to the desperate request for help – explains Carla Rocchi, president of the animal rights association – and in two days we organized the mission to send twelve tons of goods for animals and people: pet food , medicines, pet carriers, accessories for animals but also drinking water, canned food, pasta, rice and articles for the person ».

A complex and articulated mission in which the role of the Farnesina Crisis Unit was fundamental: starting from the Enpa hub in Verona on 23 March, the mission had its first step in Olkusz, Poland, and from there to Lviv and finally on the outskirts of Kiev. But for days it was not possible to complete the “last mile”, that is the few kilometers between the SaveUkraine hub (our local NGO partner) and the refuge of Andrea Cisternino. The surrounding area was in fact under Russian control and no entry or exit was allowed.
Also in those days the work of the Foreign Ministry was important, which tried to deal with the opening of an ad hoc corridor in the impossibility of getting help through – for example – the Ukrainian Red Cross. And while waiting for a corridor, the Ukrainian army has recaptured 16 municipalities including the one where the refuge is located. The day before we had managed to pass three small boxes of drugs requested by Cisternino. Today finally the good news: all the aid has reached its destination.
