On the afternoon of this Tuesday, March 19, the Colombian Navy and the Ministry of Culture issued a press release in which they refer to the situation of the Galeón San José.

In it, it was indicated that until now the entire discovery of the asset of cultural interest and its archaeological evidence “are deposited without any variation, other than that produced by the marine dynamics itself (currents and fauna), without evidence of external interventions”.

Along these lines, in response to complaints about alleged irregular interventions after the discovery of the San José galleon, the Government reported:

“During the presidential period of President Gustavo Petro, under his instructions and with the coordination of the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Knowledge, in the company of the National Navy of Colombia, the General Maritime Directorate, Dimar, and the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History – ICANH, for the first time in history, a model of comprehensive public management of the archaeological site and asset of cultural interest, protected by regulations and public mission.

In a second point, the statement assures that “since the beginning of the Government, a detailed analysis was made of the state of the technical, scientific and legal processes related to the archaeological site and asset of cultural interest of the Galeón San José, which concluded that this “It is an invaluable cultural heritage of Colombians that must be managed under the figure of a protected archaeological area of ​​the national order.”

And in a third point it is indicated that “in response to complaints of alleged improper interventions, the entities involved in the investigation of the property of cultural interest Galeón San José state that the baseline information available, as a result of the Verification and Security Campaign of the BIC Galeón San José of May 2022, carried out by the National Navy, the General Maritime Directorate and with the accompaniment of the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History and the National Legal Defense Agency of the State, does not allow the inference of any kind of human intervention ” .

And the institution states that, “during the development of the research project that will be carried out in 2024, the analytical and control parameters over the area of ​​the Galeón San José cultural interest asset will be reviewed, in order to determine the state of hydrographic evolution , oceanographic and biological of this archaeological site”.

Finally, it was indicated that this year the Colombian State will invest 17,962 million pesos, which include:

to). Strengthening technical capacity with the adaptation of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), from the multipurpose ship ARC Caribe.

b). The adaptation of a materials conservation laboratory in the facilities of the Caribbean Oceanographic and Hydrographic Research Center of the General Maritime Directorate.

c). A permanent process of scientific dissemination and dissemination to multiple interested audiences.
