After a scoreless 120 minutes, the teams had to go to the penalty mark to settle for a place in this summer’s EC in Germany.
In the end, Georgia was the strongest and won 4-2.
They will be part of the EC group with Turkey, Portugal and the Czech Republic. Later on Tuesday, Ukraine – Iceland and Wales – Poland will settle for the last two European Championship places.
Georgia was part of Norway’s group in the EC qualification, but as a result of being in the C division, they got another chance via the play-off.
Georgia has never participated in the EC or World Cup. They played their first official match in 1990 after breaking away from the Soviet football system. Georgia was then still part of the Soviet Union.
In overtime of the 1st half, there was a row after a situation on the touchline. Afterwards, Georgia’s Giorgi Loria, who was sitting on the bench, was sent off. Georgia thus avoided playing with ten men. Neither team had the ball in the back of the net in regular time.
Greece sensationally won the European Championship in 2004, but since then they have only appeared twice. Not since 2014 (WC) has the country participated in an international championship.
