DRESDEN – The German Social Democratic (SPD) MEP Matthias Cornerthe party’s leading candidate in Saxony in the European elections, was “attacked and seriously injured” last night while putting up posters in the state capital, Dresden. The agency writes it Dpa citing the police and the party.

The 41-year-old was hospitalized and “will have to be operated on”, the agency reports, noting that there had been attempts at intimidation, destruction of posters and insults towards militants who put them up.

A few minutes earlier, according to the police, a group of four people had also attacked a 28-year-old Green militant while he was hanging: the attackers hit and kicked him, injuring him. The investigators are following the lead that they are the same attackers as Ecke, the report continues Dpa.

The German Interior Minister, Nancy Faesercondemned the “brutal act of violence.”

“If a politically motivated attack against MP Matthias Ecke were confirmed a few weeks before the European elections, this serious act of violence would also be a serious attack against democracy, we are experiencing a new dimension of anti-democratic violence”, added the German minister, according to which “extremists and populists who fuel a growing climate of violence with total verbal hostility against democratic politicians are co-responsible” of this type of attacks occurring with increasing frequency. “The rule of law must react, and will do so, with a tough procedure and with further protection measures for the democratic forces of our country”, she concluded.
