This Sunday morning, the 22nd round of The league had a sequel. Away from home, Girona beat Celta de Vigo, 1-0, in a match held at the Balaídos stadium. The only goal for the Catalan team was scored by Portu.
With the away win, Girona resumed its lead in the Spanish Championship, reaching 55 points and surpassing Real Madrid’s 54, who have a game in hand. Celta, in turn, remains in danger and is in 16th place, with 17 points – the team led by Rafa Benítez could still be overtaken if Sevilla or Cádiz win in the round.
Now, both clubs will only return to the pitch next weekend. On Saturday (03/2), Girona hosts Real Sociedad, at 5 pm (Brasília time), at Estadi Montilivi, for the 23rd round of the Spanish Championship.
On the other hand, Celta de Vigo also enters the field for La Liga and faces Osasuna away from home. The ball starts at 12:15 pm next Sunday (04/2), at the Reyno de Navarra stadium.
The game
Girona started putting pressure on Celta and almost opened the scoring in the 11th minute. After Savinho’s cross, Dovbyk escaped the opposing defense’s marking and headed the ball, but goalkeeper Guaita was well positioned and sent the ball wide for a corner.
A minute later, from a corner kick, Guaita saved Celta again. Aleix García crossed and Dovbyk rose higher than the home team’s defenders to head it into the left corner, but the archer went after it to prevent the first goal of the game.
Celta even came in with danger later, but Girona opened the scoring. In the 20th minute, Miguel Gutiérrez arrived on the left side after receiving it from Savinho and crossed low into the penalty area. Portu took the mark and finished low to make it 1-0 for the visitors.
With 31 minutes, Celta almost scored the equalizer. After a beautiful pass, Douvikas came face to face with goalkeeper Gazzaniga, but he gave the ball a little too much and the Girona archer managed to clear it.
The second half didn’t hold many emotions. With 1-0, Girona tried to hold on to the result and, at the same time, find a counterattack to end the game, while Celta tried to seek a draw, but without success.
