Killer Mike won Grammys for Best Rap Album, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song — an award he snagged from Aqua, Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice, who were nominated for “Barbie World.”

All the rapper’s awards were handed out during the Grammy Awards pre-party in Los Angeles, which happens right before the official telecast.

Despite the fact that this was Killer Mike’s first Grammy awards in over 20 years, he did not get to enjoy the celebration for long: Just before the official award ceremony was to begin, he was led away from the Crypto.com arena in handcuffs, reports the Hollywood Reporter.

The site has posted a video of the incident on X:

Mike Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to the website Deadline that a man was arrested around 4 pm local time.

According to the celebrity website TMZ the rapper is said to have been accused of getting into an altercation with a security guard at the arena.

As the news spread, there was a jubilant message from the artist’s X/Twitter account:

The police in Los Angeles confirm on X/Twitter that they have arrested Michael Render, which is the rapper’s real name. He is charged with grossly offensive behaviour.

According to Deadline the offense carries a penalty of just over NOK 20,000 in fines or six months’ imprisonment.

Variety writes that they have tried to get a comment from the rapper’s representatives and the police without success.

When he thanked for the awards on stage, Killer Mike said that he hoped to show others that you are never too old to rap, AP writes.

– When I was 20, I thought it was cool to deal drugs. When I was 40, I began to live with the regret of things I had done. When I turned 45, I started rapping about it. As a 48-year-old, I stand here full of empathy and sympathy for the things I have done, he said, among other things.
