Argentine Biodiversity Threatened by Climate Crisis Denialists and Goverment Policies
Greenpeace has issued a warning about the threat to Argentine biodiversity posed by those who deny the climate crisis and the actions of the current Government led by President Javier Milei. Hernán Pérez Orsi, a member of the Greenpeace Research Department in Argentina, made these statements during an interview with Efe while on a scientific expedition aboard the ship Arctic Sunrise in the Galapagos Islands.
Pérez Orsi highlighted the importance of fundamental environmental laws that were achieved in Argentina at the beginning of the century, such as the Glacier Protection Law. However, he expressed concern that the current government has shifted towards a more extractivist model, endangering ecosystems like the Chaco forest and the Argentine sea.
Describing the current debate in Argentina as “medieval,” Pérez Orsi emphasized the denial of climate change and the loss of biodiversity. He voiced concerns about the government’s denialist and pro-extractivist behavior under President Milei, accusing them of lobbying to dismantle environmental protection laws and even labeling environmental organizations like Greenpeace as terrorist groups.
Pérez Orsi stressed the importance of defending the environmental legislation already in place and standing up for those who protect nature and their way of life. He called for more consultation and consensus with the population when making decisions that impact the environment and future generations.
In conclusion, Greenpeace is urging Argentina to defend its environmental achievements and prioritize the protection of its natural resources for the benefit of all.
