The Hamburger Hochbahn is expecting a complete disruption of bus and subway traffic in the Hanseatic city on Friday due to the warning strike by the ver.di union.
“As things currently stand, it can be assumed that the Hochbahn will no longer be able to bring services to the road and rail once the strike begins,” said a spokesman for the city’s transport company on Wednesday. The Hochbahn operates bus and subway services in the Hanseatic city. The strike is scheduled to begin at 3 a.m. Friday and end 24 hours later. “The night buses from Friday to Saturday are also affected,” said the ver.di union. The S-Bahn, which belongs to the Deutsche Bahn group, is not affected.
VHH: Effects still unclear
The Hamburg-Holstein transport company (VHH), on the other hand, said on Wednesday that it was currently “not yet clear to what extent there would be a strike”. In the nationwide public transport collective bargaining dispute that is ongoing in regional negotiations, the ver.di union called for a warning strike at VHH on Monday.

According to the Hamburg Transport Association (HVV), in addition to the Hochbahn and VHH in the HVV area, the Autokraft, KViP and VLP companies will also be on strike on Friday. “The transport companies HADAG, KVG, Buchholz Bus, VKP as well as the S-Bahn, A-Bahn and R-Bahn lines are not affected by the strike.”
Hochbahn is “surprised” by the strike
Hochbahn human resources manager Saskia Heidenberger said she was “very surprised by the call for a strike.” She referred to constructive discussions with the union. They have already agreed on several points and have already agreed on the next negotiation date. “In our view, this strike is difficult to explain to passengers.” The VHH management pointed out that it had already “submitted an attractive proposal for the overall tariff”, which ver.di had not accepted.
