A magnitude 7.5 earthquake hit the coast of central-western Japan today, prompting authorities to declare a tsunami warning.
The Japanese authorities ordered the population to evacuate the area affected by the violence earthquake, on the central-western coast of the country. “All residents must evacuate immediately to higher ground,” national broadcaster NHK said after the earthquake struck at around 4.10pm local time (8.10am in Italy) on January 1, 2024.
In these images, shot by a resident and which quickly went viral on social media, high waves are already moving up the river in the city of Toyama near the Hagiura Bridge.
