Chief Executive Li Jiachao Postpones Garbage Levy to August 1 for Clearer Implementation
The implementation date of garbage levy in Hong Kong has been postponed once again, this time to August 1. Chief Executive Li Jiachao addressed the reason for the postponement at a trade union meeting on the morning of the 23rd, emphasizing the government’s pragmatic and realistic work attitude in finding new solutions to address problems that arise.
Li Jiachao highlighted the importance of using the additional time to give the public a clearer understanding of the levy arrangement. He emphasized that garbage levy is already a law in Hong Kong, and the focus is on how to implement and enforce the law effectively.
The Environment and Ecology Bureau is taking a pragmatic approach to the matter, using different methods to explain the levy practices to the public. This includes piloting the levy in government departments and buildings to serve as a demonstration. Li Jiachao emphasized the bureau’s commitment to continue with publicity and education efforts, using more visual explanations and demonstrations with real objects.
The Chief Executive reiterated the government’s responsibility to implement and enforce the law, while also seeking cooperation from the public. He believes that the public agrees on the need for a green, hygienic, and sustainable environment, and understands the rationale behind the garbage levy.
In addition to the implementation of the garbage levy, the government is also working on promoting recycling efforts and reducing the amount of garbage generated in Hong Kong. The long-term goal is to achieve zero garbage in the city through recycling and land reclamation.
