India cancels Gandhi’s beloved Scottish hymn: “It’s a symbol of colonialism”

LONDON – A Scottish anthem that liked the Mahatma Gandhi was first wiped out of India’s independence celebrations, sparking controversy over Britain’s colonial past and the nationalism of India’s prime minister’s government Narendra Modi.

The passage in question, entitled Abide with me (Stay with me), is an 1847 Christian hymn composed by the Scottish Anglican pastor Henry Francis Lyle: a prayer to God that he will remain until death beside the one who pronounces it.
