– Not pretty
Apfel was a central figure in the American fashion industry. She was known for her very colorful outfits, heavy jewelery and glasses and bright red lipstick. Museum exhibitions and a documentary, “Iris”, were also made about Apfel.
– I’m not pretty, and I’ll never be pretty, but that doesn’t matter. I have something much better. I have style, Apfel herself once said.
In the latter part of her life, she also became a social media celebrity with almost three million followers on Instagram.
– Being stylish and fashionable are two completely different things. You can easily buy yourself to be fashionable. I think style is in your genes. It implies originality and courage, says Apfel in a TikTok video, according to AP.

In the White House
Apfel and her husband, Carl, who died in 2015, ran the company Old World Weavers, which produced textiles and specialized in the restoration of antique textiles.
This meant, among other things, that Apfel carried out projects in the White House under six different presidents. Among her celebrity clients were Estee Lauder and Greta Garbo.
