PARIS. The French military captured one of the major leaders of the Islamic State (Isis) of the Grand Sahara in the Sahel, Oumeya Ould Albakaye, in Mali.
This was announced by the General Staff of the French army explaining that the capture took place on the night between 11 and 12 June by the soldiers involved in the Barkhane operation.
French media explain that Albakaye was the head of the Grand Sahara Isis for Gourma in Mali and for Oudalan in northern Burkina Faso. He is held responsible for organizing several attacks on various military bases in Mali, including that of Gao.
The jihadist leader will be detained by the Barkhane military for questioning for a few days, after which he will be handed over to the Bamako authorities.
