Minister of the Interior Promises Action Against Extortion
In a message to the nation, Minister of the Interior Francisco Jiménez, addressed the growing security problem of extortion in Guatemala. He expressed his commitment to confront this issue and create conditions to contain it.
Jiménez announced that the Interior Ministry will soon take action to combat extortion and prioritize citizen security. He cited the recent case of Mynor Alvizures, a delivery man who was murdered after refusing to comply with extortion demands, as an example of the devastating impact of this criminal activity.
The tragic event occurred on January 24 on 14th Avenue and 18th Street in Zone 1 of the capital. Alvizures, who was driving a bottled beverage distribution vehicle, was attacked with a firearm after refusing to receive a telephone used for extortion.
Jiménez assured the public that the government is determined to address the issue and prevent further tragedies like the one experienced by Alvizures. “It’s not going to stay like this. Rest assured, it won’t stay like this,” he declared.
The Interior Ministry’s announcement comes at a time when the Guatemalan public is seeking solutions to address the troubling increase in extortion-related violence. The government’s commitment to confront this issue will be closely watched in the months ahead.
