Justice of Peru confirms impediment of entry into the country against former Bolivian president Evo Morales

LIMA (AP) — The Peruvian justice confirmed on Thursday an impediment to entry into Peru against former Bolivian President Evo Morales, ordered at the beginning of 2023 by the immigration agency, but which had been annulled by a judicial writ of habeas corpus in favor of the former president. Bolivian.

In a ruling known on Thursday, the Superior Court of Justice of Lima declared habeas corpus unfounded and affirms that Morales is “a dangerous person for the security of the State and that is the main reason for preventing his entry into our territory.”

The resolution, however, indicates that Morales lives in Bolivia and that “he has not even shown any indication or attempt of wanting to enter Peru, which implies that at this time there is no threat or possibility of being affected.”

Morales is critical of the Peruvian president, Dina Boluarte, whom he described as a usurper of the presidential position in Peru, as well as responsible for “the serious violations of human rights” that occurred between December 2022 and March 2023 in the demonstrations that followed the dismissal of former president Pedro Castillo, after trying to dissolve the Peruvian Parliament to avoid a vote against him.

For weeks, there were calls for protests and roadblocks in the Andes, demanding the resignation of the then new president and resulting in 49 civilians killed in clashes with police and soldiers. At least 30 of them, due to firearms, as revealed by autopsies.

The former Bolivian president was close to Castillo (2021-2022), who was sent to preventive detention on charges of rebellion after his attempt to dissolve the Legislature on December 7, 2022 and govern by “decree.” Boluarte, then Castillo’s vice president, replaced him.
