Russian President Putin Hints in Interview with US Media: West Should Target China, Not Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently hinted in an exclusive interview with former American Fox News host Tucker Carlson that Russia is not the biggest enemy of the West, but the biggest threat is the CCP. Putin said that the West should target China, not Russia. This interview took place on February 6, at the Moscow Kremlin.

During the more than two-hour exclusive interview, Putin answered about 60 questions in a one-on-one question-and-answer format. The content about China has aroused great concern from the international community.

Putin pointed out that Russia lags far behind China in terms of population and economic scale, and the threat from the CCP far exceeds that of Russia. He emphasized that Russia has a “market economy” and “does not have a communist regime,” and there are no longer clear ideological differences with Western countries.

The interview provided insight into the relationship between Russia and China. Political analyst Chen Pokong noted that the relationship between the two countries is based on mutual exploitation and that both sides will abandon each other and turn to the West if the right opportunity arises.

Regarding the direction of Sino-Russian relations, Chen Pokong believes that the alliance is becoming increasingly unstable and may eventually disintegrate. He added that China’s new defense minister, Dong Jun, recently held a video conference with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, with Shoigu stating that Sino-Russian relations are at the best level in history.

President Putin’s remarks come at a time when former US President Donald Trump, a top candidate for the 2024 Republican Party’s presidential campaign, has suggested that if re-elected, he would form an alliance with Russia to fight communism. Trump’s return to the White House is currently viewed as a high probability event due to his dominant position in the Republican campaign.

With the complex international situation, it remains to be seen how the relationship between Russia, China, and the United States will evolve in the coming years.
