“There is a devaluation of the past of history, there is a certain weakness at the core of these governments, they present themselves as very strong and all powerful but they have a very weak base”

This Wednesday’s Encuentro interview with Julio Villagran, historian Gregorio López, mentioned that every authoritarian and populist government always tries to present itself as new and tries to make a break with the past, because in the past it will find elements that make it uncomfortable.

“There is a devaluation of the past of history, there is a certain weakness at the core of these governments, they present themselves as very strong and all powerful but they have a very weak base”indicates Gregorio Bernal

For Bernal, the fact that the government talks about a republic is a trap, because a central element of a republic is that there is separation of powers and this government has control of the executive and judicial powers.

“In this country nothing happens with the issue of reforming the constitution because people are not aware of what the reform of the article implies” said Gregorio Bernal

Regarding this, the historian recalled that the government of Maximiliano Hernández Martínez lasted 13 years, he had been re-elected through the mechanism of reforming the constitution.

“On February 29, 1944, the Constituent Assembly declared Martínez president for a fourth term with the detail that they had increased his presidential term to 6 years… On April 2, 1944, a military uprising broke out, given how strong the government of Hernández Martínez, it was thought that the only force that could overthrow him was the military.” noted the historian.
