Bundesliga soccer team VfL Wolfsburg is sticking with coach Niko Kovac despite the ongoing negative series. This was confirmed by sports director Sebastian Schindzielorz after the 2-3 defeat against VfB Stuttgart.
“That’s what we’ve communicated in the last few weeks and we stand by it,” said the 45-year-old in ZDF’s “Aktuelle Sportstudio” on Saturday evening. “It’s obviously not a pleasant situation, it’s obviously eating away at us,” admitted Schindzielorz, referring to nine games without a win in a row. “We won’t give up, we will pick ourselves up again this week and try again next weekend,” announced the ex-professional.

Last victory in December in Darmstadt
The “Wolves” have been waiting for a three-point win since December 16th last year. At that time, they managed a difficult 1-0 win against bottom team SV Darmstadt 98. Since then, the factory club has drawn six times and lost three games. Realistically, VfL has to say goodbye to the European Cup ambitions formulated at the beginning of the season, now twelve points behind in sixth place. In relegation place 16, Lower Saxony still has a reassuring cushion. But if there are further negative experiences, Wolfsburg could even be in danger of relegation.
Kovac is combative
“Everyone likes it when there are successes, at the moment it’s not like that,” said Kovac. “We have no choice but to continue to work and fight and turn this in the right direction,” added the 52-year-old. His contract with the factory club runs until 2025. It is questionable whether the coach is allowed to fulfill this requirement. Recently there were rumors that VfL was interested in signing Fabian Hürzeler for the new season. The coaching shooting star has not yet extended his contract with second division leaders FC St. Pauli, which expires in the summer.
