Liverpool in huge trouble in the Europa League after a shock loss to Atalanta – Dagsavisen

The guests are only in 6th place in Serie A, but caused a lot of trouble for Klopp’s somewhat reserved line-up right from the start. Gianluca Scamacca scored once in each half. Both times he was able to finish undisturbed on a cross from the right after weak defensive play by the hosts.

Immediately after Mohamed Salah’s goal was disallowed for offside, Mario Pasalic put the final nail in the coffin after new defensive blisters by Liverpool.

The guests had several great chances in the first half and if it wasn’t for a couple of great saves by Caoimhin Kelleher, the game could have been broken before the break.

Mario Pasalic had the first great chance before three minutes had been played, but Kelleher threw himself and got the ball in his face. Just before the break, Kelleher saved alone with Teun Koopmeiners.

Free path

Then Scamacca had scored the leading goal in the 38th minute. Koopmeiners won a duel on the right touchline and played Davide Zappacosta, who was given free space on the right. He raided towards the line and angled out to Scamacca, who controlled the shot in the corner.

Harvey Elliott had Liverpool’s best chance midway through the half, but his shot hit both the crossbar and the post.

At half-time, Klopp substituted Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Andy Robertson, and Liverpool started the second half fresh. Salah forced goalkeeper Juan Musso into a very good save, but then Atalanta seized the baton again.

Enormous task

In the 60th minute, Scamacca doubled the lead. Charles De Ketelaere was played on the right against an anything but tight defensive line. At the cross, Sacamacca was both onside and completely alone, and he cut in on the volley and placed the ball in the corner.

Salah thought he had scored an important reducing goal in the 79th minute, but he was just offside on the forward from Diogo Jota.

In the 83rd minute, Szoboszlai lost the ball in his own half. Virgil van Dijk destroyed the offside line when Ederson was played forward. Kelleher saved his shot, but Pasalic put in the rebound.

Benfica win for Aursnes

Fredrik Aursnes and his Benfica team-mates bounced back from some recent setbacks and beat Marseille 2-1 at home. It looked like a better result, but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang reduced midway through the 2nd half.

Rafa Silva scored the lead after a wall play with Casper Tengstedt after just over a quarter of an hour, and Angel Di Maria doubled Benfica’s lead in the 52nd minute when he combined well with David Neres. Aursnes played the entire match.

In Germany, West Ham sealed well against treble-chasing Leverkusen and looked like getting a strong draw home to London, but Jonas Hofmann and former Glimt player Victor Boniface scored on the spot to give Leverkusen a 2-0 win .

The all-Italian quarter-final in the Europa League ended with a 1-0 victory for Roma away against Milan. Center back Gianluca Mancini scored the winning goal in the 17th minute. Olivier Giroud had a finish on the crossbar for Milan just before the end.
