The course of the Liverpool vs Burnley match

Liverpool were without Alisson Becker and Joe Gomez who were absent because they had the flu. Caoimhin Kelleher played between the sticks, while the attacking trio again consisted of Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz.

Wataru Endo is back in action after returning from defending the Japanese national team in the Asian Cup. Despite appearing dominant from the first minute, Liverpool had difficulty dismantling Burnley’s defense.

Burnley actually created the first chance in this match in the 10th minute. Zeki Amdouni got the ball from Dafro Fofana and tried to beat the goal from a tight angle, but was pushed over by Kelleher.

Liverpool were finally able to break the deadlock in the 31st minute with their first shot on goal. From cornerer Trent Alexander-Arnold, the ball failed to reach James Trafford and was easily headed by Diogo Jota into an empty net.

Burnley equalized the score in first half injury time. Just like Liverpool’s goal, Burnley got it through Josh Brownhill’s corner which Dara O’Shea headed without Kelleher being able to block it.

The 1-1 score lasted until halftime.

Entering the second half, Liverpool brought on Harvey Elliott to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold who was having problems.

Liverpool restored the lead in the 52nd minute. It started with Endo who grabbed the ball at the front of the penalty box, and aimed at Elliott who entered from the right side.

The pass was sent to the near post for Diaz to head in which changed the score to 2-1 for Liverpool. The goal was reviewed by VAR because Nunez was caught offside but it was finally approved.

Once again, after taking the lead, Liverpool had difficulty containing Burnley’s attacks, especially Datro Fofana, who was troublesome with his speed. Fofana even had two chances to score in close time.

In the 64th minute, Fofana managed to steal the ball from Jarell Quansah and was left facing Kelleher, but his shot was blocked.

Three minutes later, Fofana was in a free position after receiving Amdouni’s pass. He had control of the ball for a moment before choosing to shoot at the far post, but it was still narrow.

Nunez! The Uruguayan striker was finally able to score a goal and reduce Liverpool’s lead to 3-1 in the 79th minute. From a corner that Burnley failed to secure, the ball ended up at Elliott’s feet, who sent a cross and was headed by Nunez without Trafford being able to block it.
