China News Agency, Paris, March 27 (Reporter Li Yang) French President Emmanuel Macron on the 27th local time called for restraint in words and deeds when dealing with the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He also said that in order to end the crisis, he would continue dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Macron’s remarks were in response to remarks by US President Joe Biden that attacked Russia the previous day. Biden delivered a speech on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict in Warsaw, Poland on the 26th, blaming Russia and Putin himself. The White House later clarified that Biden’s remarks did not represent a change in U.S. policy toward Russia.
Macron said on French TV 3 on the 27th that he would not use Biden’s language and that he would continue discussions with Putin. He noted that the priority now is to achieve a ceasefire and then diplomatically get Russian troops out of Ukraine. Macron believes that steps must be taken to prevent the escalation of the situation if there is still hope of stopping the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Macron further pointed out that Europe cannot forget its own geography and history. He stressed that Europe is not in the context of a “cold war” between the US and Russia.
When talking about the arrangement of the dialogue with Putin, Macron revealed that he will have another phone call with Putin on the 28th or 29th, mainly to discuss the evacuation of people trapped in the eastern Ukrainian city of Mariupol.
Macron had said earlier that France would seek to cooperate with Turkey and Greece and other countries on humanitarian operations to help evacuate people who wanted to leave Mariupol, which he hoped could be carried out in the next few days. He said the issue had been discussed with Mayor Mariupol and coordinated with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
