Region VI Airport Authority (Otban), again closed Minangkabau International Airport (BIM) activities starting Thursday (28/3/2024) at 10.00 WIB. The closure was carried out again due to the increasing activity of Mount Marapi.

“It has been temporarily closed. The impact of Mount Marapi’s ash eruption activity is returning to the airport,” said Head of Otban Wil VI Padang, Capt. Megi Helmiadi when confirmed by detikSumut.

According to Megi, from the results of the paper test, volcanic ash had reached the airport area, so his party decided to temporarily close BIM from 10.00-14.00 WIB.

“The results of observations carried out by the team using paper tests, the ash has reached here. So it was decided to temporarily close BIM from 10.00-14.00 WIB,” he said.

After this closure, Megi said BIM will carry out evaluations every hour to determine whether or not BIM’s current closure needs to be extended. Meanwhile, he has not provided details regarding the affected flights.

“We will carry out evaluations and observations every hour. So it is not yet certain whether this closure will be extended. Meanwhile, the affected flights are still being collected by us,” he concluded.

It is known that currently the volcanic eruption activity is increasing again. From yesterday until now, Mount Marapi has erupted 6 times with a total of 22 gusts.
