Maximilian Marterer started the qualification in Madrid as the seeded player.
The start of the Masters in Madrid was anything but good for Maximilian Marterer. The 100th in the world rankings lost to Giulio Zeppieri in two sets and had to forego participation in the main draw at the well-endowed event in the Spanish capital.
In the first set, a single break decided the outcome, which did not go in the German’s favor. In the second set, Marterer led 2-0, but was unable to maintain this lead. In the tiebreak the 2-5 deficit could no longer be made up and the end was sealed.
The 28-year-old will take part in the Challenger 175 in Aix-en-Provence next week. Due to the good line-up, it currently looks like participation in the qualification is imminent.
