Mauricio Funes would be interested in participating in the 2029 elections – Diario La Página

Mauricio Funes Cartagena, the fugitive former president of El Salvador who is currently in asylum in Nicaragua, has not ruled out the possibility of participating in the 2029 elections. Funes, who has seven arrest warrants against him, stated in a recent interview via Zoom that if he is acquitted of the crimes he is accused of by 2029, he would consider getting involved in the political life of El Salvador.

“I would be willing to accept a candidacy, although I find it unlikely given the current circumstances,” Funes said. He emphasized that in politics, one should never say never, as possibilities can change rapidly.

Funes expressed a desire to contribute to the transformation process that El Salvador needs and believes that his work during his presidential term was incomplete. However, he made it clear that his potential candidacy would not be affiliated with the FMLN party or any other current left-wing party.

Funes’ statements have sparked speculation and controversy in El Salvador, as his return to the political arena could have significant implications. For now, it remains to be seen whether Funes will be acquitted of the charges against him and if he will indeed make a comeback in the 2029 elections.
