National mourning on Wednesday in honor of Jacques Delors |  Europe

The day of national mourning in honor of the former president of the European Commission Jacques Delors will be observed on Wednesday, according to a decree approved today by the Government, to which the President of the Republic gave his agreement.

“The Council of Ministers approved today, electronically, the declaration of national mourning on January 31, 2024 for the death of Jacques Delors”, reads a statement from the Government.

According to the Government, “Portugal and Spain jointly decided to declare national mourning, in order to coincide with the tribute event that will be organized that same day by the European Commission, in Brussels, and which will be attended by the Prime Minister”.

According to a note published on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic on the Internet, the head of State, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, “gave his agreement to the Government’s decree that sets for tomorrow [quarta-feira]January 31st, a day of national mourning in honor of Jacques Delors”.

Jacques Delors, a central figure in the construction of the European project and considered the “father of the euro”, died on December 27, in Paris, aged 98.
