Bundesliga soccer team Werder Bremen improved on their win over Bayern Munich from the previous matchday. The Green-Whites won 3-1 (1-1) against SC Freiburg on Saturday and have established themselves in the middle of the table with the three.

Werder’s national player Marvin Ducksch (9th) and Freiburg’s Vincenzo Grifo (28th) each scored from a penalty in the first half. Justin Njinmah shot the North Germans back into the lead shortly after the restart (54th) and new signing Julian Malatini, who had recently been substituted, secured the celebrated three-pointer in stoppage time on his debut (90th + 3).

Coach Ole Werner’s team has now been unbeaten in six games and, with 23 points, is now eleven points ahead of 1. FC Köln in relegation place 16. The Rhinelanders played at the same time 1-1 in Wolfsburg.

“It just feels incredibly good.”

Werder debutant Julian Malatini

Debutant Malatini, whose main job is actually a defender, was overjoyed after his successful debut: “It just feels incredibly good,” said the 22-year-old Argentine, who has “arrived” after only a short time in Bremen.

Njinmah, the other main protagonist of the afternoon, spoke of “pure euphoria. It was a really great game today.”

Ducksch gives Werder an early lead

Werner’s team initially continued seamlessly against Breisgauer where they left off in the convincing win at Bayern. And as in Munich, it was always the Bremen youngster Njinmah who caused danger after danger with his deep runs – and played a key role in Bremen’s early lead.

In the 8th minute, Felix Agu initially missed his low cross. After looking at the VAR images, referee Robert Hartmann decided on a penalty because SCF defender Kilian Sildillia had hit the midfielder on the foot. Ducksch grabbed the ball and scored safely (9th).

Break in the Bremen game after protest against investor deal

The Green-Whites were doing well in the game, but were slowed down to a certain extent by their own fans, who expressed their displeasure against the DFL’s planned investor deal with plenty of chocolate coins. When the match started again after a break of several minutes, the guests were suddenly also involved.

First, SVW goalkeeper Michael Zetterer scratched a header from Lucas Höler off the line (19th), but nine minutes later he was also beaten. Vincenzo Grifo confidently converted the second penalty of the game to make it 1-1. Previously, Olivier Deman had brought Noah Weißhaupt down clumsily and unnecessarily on the edge of the box. The goal was the final highlight of the first half.

Njinmah scores with a powerful shot

The start of the second half wasn’t as fast-paced as much of the first 45 minutes, but once again it was Njinmah who took control of the game – and scored. After winning the ball in midfield, the striker got the ball, moved decisively into the middle and shot from 18 meters with his right into the left corner (53′).

The 23-year-old had now tasted blood and tried again from distance, but missed (60′). The Bremen team now showed a similarly confident performance as in the first 15 minutes, putting the guests under pressure deep in their half and keeping them far away from their own goal.

Bittencourt missed the dream goal by centimeters

The SVW was closer to the third goal than the Breisgauers were to the equalizer. Leonardo Bittencourt hit the crossbar with a shot from around 40 meters. He saw that SCF keeper Noah Atubolu was very far in front of his goal (82nd).

But it was enough because Malatini, who had been substituted two minutes earlier, went after Attila Szalai, went around Atubolu and pushed the ball into the empty goal. The rest was green and white celebration of the second win in a row and a big step towards staying in the league.
