The intent is naturally to escape possible Houthi attacks which, in the intentions of the Yemeni militias, are a sort of retaliation against the Israeli bombings in Gaza. It is true that in the first few years even container ships ended up in the sights of the militias they had nothing to do with Tel Aviv. However, a few weeks ago, the same militiamen asked the ships in transit to communicate their non-involvement with Israel’s trade to get some sort of pass.

The United States and Great Britain have launched military action against Yemen, also bombing the capital San’a’ to avoid attacks and in the affected waters they cross paths with various military units. However, for now, the attacks they do not stop. So far there were about thirty of them and many shipping companies have decided to avoid the Red Sea route, and therefore the Suez passage, instead circumnavigating Africa. This causes an extension of the duration of the trip and higher transport costs, which in the long run could have repercussions on the prices of products sold in Europe and fan a flame of inflation that seemed to be going out. Interesting to find out what could happen if the Houthi attacks became truly carefully selective, targeting only ships that have anything to do with Israel.
