Optoma HZ146X-W: An affordable and efficient Full HD laser projector

Lhe manufacturers of home cinema projectors did not wait for the official end date of mercury lamps to change their tune and move towards laser or LED diodes. Since spring 2024, we have been witnessing not a floral surge but a real blossoming of laser video projectors! Acer, BenQ, Epson, JVC, Xgimi, ViewSonic… It’s a flood of announcements (official and unofficial!). Optoma is not to be outdone and it is a small Full HD model that I am going to talk to you about today: the Optoma HZ146X-W (but where do they get these extension references?). Its main interest lies in its price of €829 for a laser model!

Before starting the overview of the main characteristics of this model, I would like to send a short message of service to the attention of pirate and delinquent sites worldnews et breakingnews who shamelessly copy my articles. Their laziness is such that they go so far as to reproduce the entire passage. Dear gentlemen web pirates, go and help yourself elsewhere before I decide to prosecute you criminally. Google reports have already been sent.

Here is this little adjustment completed. Let’s get back on track with our programs and forgive me for this interruption..

So I said that this Optoma uses a 0.65″ DLP chip from Texas Instruments to display a Full HD resolution of 2 million pixels. The projection ratio of this new model is 1.48 – 1.62:1.

The HZ146X-W relies on a long-lasting laser-phosphor light source, which provides up to 30,000 hours of operation. The manufacturer announces a maximum brightness of 3,800 ANSI lumens and a dynamic contrast of 2,000,000:1 (these contrast figures are always so absurd at Optoma!).

It benefits from Gaming capabilities thanks to its high refresh rate of 120 Hz. Its input lag at 60 Hz should reach 17 ms. Despite its Full HD resolution, it supports 4K HDR and HLG sources by downscaling and is 3D Ready (DLP-Link). But what I mainly remember is that at €829, it is one of the cheapest DLP projectors with a 0.65 DMD chip on the market (if not the cheapest!).

Well, at this price, you shouldn’t expect optical unit motorization, image interpolation, ALLM options or HDMI 2.1 sockets. But this laser home cinema projector promises greater contrast and sharpness than the host of 0.47 chip models.
