This year, ten actors were nominated for the first time in one of the numerous categories. But that is not the only innovation in terms of diversity. For the first time in the history of the Oscars, two gay people were nominated whose roles in the film were also gay: Colman Domingo for his performance in “Rustin” and Jodie Foster, 61, for her performance in “Nyad.” Both roles are based on real people who also had same-sex love in real life.
A record was also broken by the nomination of Jeffrey Wright, 58, and Sterling K. Brown. Wright is nominated for best actor and Brown is nominated for best supporting actor. There have never been two Black actors nominated for leading and supporting roles in the same film before.
In addition, sound engineer Willie D. Burton was nominated for the “best sound” category this year together with his colleagues from the “Oppenheimer” sound team. This makes him the black filmmaker with the most Oscar nominations.
“Barbenheimer” – What are the chances?
The film “Barbie” was nominated in eight categories. What’s interesting is that the competition in many of the categories is so strong that “Barbie” may just win the Oscar for Best Original Song. This year two songs from the film are nominated. Billie Eilish, 22, delivered “What Was I Made For?” and Mark Ronson, 48, and Andrew Wyatt, 52, produced “I’m Just Ken” for “Barbie.”
There was also a bit of annoyance in advance that Margot Robbie, 33, and director Greta Gerwig, 40, were left out of the nominations. Ryan Gosling, 43, said in the interview: “There is no Ken without Barbie and there is no ‘Barbie’ film without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie.”
Oppenheimer could reap a long-lost success. It has not happened since 2012 that a film has won the Oscar for Best Production Design and Best Actor. Cillian Murphy, who plays Oppenheimer in the blockbuster of the same name, could make that possible this year. Because both “Oppenheimer” and Murphy have a good chance of winning the awards. In total, “Oppenheimer” was nominated in 13 categories.
A look at the history of the film’s success is also exciting.
