That Oskar Westerlin (25) is popular among Norwegians is nothing new.

When he launched chocolate buns, there were queues at grocery stores.

He made history when he released the first song made using artificial intelligencewhich went straight to the top on Spotify.

Both projects also received criticism – which also illustrates his strong influence.

– Completely insane

His latest, and still ongoing stunt, impresses greatly.

From the apartment at Frogner, which has become known as “The Office”, he has been broadcasting live on the video platform Twitch since Monday afternoon.

There he has promised to stream one minute longer for every new subscriber he gets – a so-called “subathon”.

Among other things, he has filled the hours by answering followers’ questions – and only taking breaks for primary needs – such as sleep.

Tuesday showed Twitchtracker that Westerlin had a share of around 74 per cent of Norwegian viewers on the platform, with approximately 5,000 viewers.

– 5,000 viewers at the same time is absolutely insane. As far as I know, there are no Norwegians who have been close to the shows he is on now, so he blows up all scales when it comes to Norwegian Twitch, says TV 2 reporter Preben Fjell.

He is known from the former YouTube duo “Prebz and Dennis”.

Fjell believes that Westerlin can attract many new subscribers and thus must keep the stream going for a long time.

– He really puts himself on an international level.

– To put this into context, the biggest Norwegian figures on Twitch are perhaps from 400-500 viewers, and then you are big. It is rare for Norwegians to reach 1,000, then we are talking about something extraordinary, like a charity streamer, explains Fjell.

This is how the money will be used

Shortly before Westerlin completed one day of live broadcasting, on Tuesday at 16:30, he had gained 2,900 subscribers.

To subscribe for one month, you have to pay NOK 43.99. The minimum amount is NOK 37.39.

From subscribers alone, he has then brought in over NOK 100,000.

In addition, viewers can make monetary donations.

Via his manager, Vilde Darvik, Westerlin states in a message that the live broadcast should actually last 10 minutes.

– But it is now likely to last for two days, replies the influencer.

Twitch records

American Kai Cenat (22) took the subscriber record last year. After a 30-day live stream, he ended up with 306,621 subscribers on Twitch.

The record for the longest “subathon” is over two years. It holds the user Emilycc – who is still streaming.

The person who has both the most watched stream ever, and the most simultaneous viewers, is Spanish Ibai – with 3.4 million.

Good evening Norway has asked a number of questions about the money he has received.

Among other things, whether he is part of his Twitch partner-program, and thus gets paid 70 percent of the income from the subscription money. If he is not, the platform takes half.

Westerlin does not want to answer that, but rather directs the focus to what the sum is used for.

– I use the money I earn from spitting into more entertainment for the stream. I have so far gone to purchase a treadmill, and am considering getting a parrot, bathtub, chef, massage, sauna and, or, psychologist, concludes Westerlin.

Correction:

In an earlier version of the case, it was stated that the minimum amount to subscribe to Westerlin was 4.99 dollars, which is equivalent to around 53 kroner – and that he had thus brought in over 150,000 kroner. This is incorrect, as the minimum amount is NOK 37.39.
