Plane that crashed in Minas Gerais took off from Campinas, says Fire Department

The plane that crashed in Itapeva, in the interior of Minas Gerais, this Sunday morning (28), left Campo dos Amarais Airport, in Campinas, in the interior of São Paulo. The information was confirmed by the MG Fire Department, which also confirmed the deaths of seven people. According to the corporation, the call to respond to the incident took place at 10:38 am today.

The aircraft has already been located and eight firefighters are carrying out rescue work, within a perimeter of approximately 400 meters. According to the Fire Department, the deaths are being confirmed by experts from the Civil Police of Minas Gerais present at the scene. The Aeronautical Accident Investigation and Prevention Center (CENIPA) was called to investigate the case.

A CNN contacted Rede Voa, responsible for managing Campo dos Amarais Airport, in Campinas. The concessionaire responded saying that seven people boarded the aircraft: five passengers and two crew members. However, according to the aircraft’s registration document with the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), the plane was not authorized to perform an air taxi.

The accident

Witnesses who opened the call said they saw the plane breaking up in the air while flying over the region, and then its parts gradually falling to the ground.

Firefighters from Extrema are working at the scene, and confirmed that they found the bodies of two men and a woman, still unidentified, inside the aircraft. Agents continue to search for other possible victims in the region where the aircraft wreckage fell, within an approximate radius of 400 meters.

The plane, prefix PS-MTG, model PA-46-350P, was manufactured by the company Piper Aircraft. According to records from the National Civil Aviation Agency, the aircraft had its documents up to date, but was not authorized for air taxi.

The PIPER PA46 aircraft, registration PSMTG, arrived at Amarais Airport (SDAM) on January 26, 2024 at 12:48 pm, and remained in a private hangar. At 10:09 am on January 28, 2024, it departed Amarais bound for Belo Horizonte International Airport (SBBH), however, it suffered an accident before reaching its destination. Preliminary information indicates that there were 7 people on board, 5 passengers and 2 crew. However, the names of the occupants have not yet been confirmed. The aircraft was owned by IT’S Soluções Ltda.

Investigators from the Third Regional Service for the Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (SERIPA III), located in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), a regional body of the Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (CENIPA), were called this Sunday (28/01 ), to carry out the Initial Action of the incident involving the aircraft registered PS-MTG, in Itapeva (MG).

In the Initial Action, specific techniques are used, conducted by qualified and accredited personnel who carry out the collection and confirmation of data, the preservation of the elements of the investigation, the initial verification of damage caused to the aircraft, or by the aircraft, and the collection of other necessary information to the investigation process.

The conclusion of the investigations will take as short a time as possible, always depending on the complexity of each occurrence and, also, the need to discover possible contributing factors.
