On Sunday evening the TV program actually had something to suit every taste. A new episode of the crime series “Polizeiruf 110” was shown on the first, while ZDF showed the drama “Neuer Wind im Altes Land”. RTL and Sat.1 are meanwhile focusing on action-packed blockbusters with “Pirates of the Caribbean – On Stranger Tides” and “James Bond 007: Casino Royale”. At ProSieben, Joko and Klaas took over the helm and Kabel eins revealed “The Biggest Secrets of the 80s”. Meanwhile, RTLZWEI sent the comedy “Voll Abzockt” into the ratings race and at VOX, Tim Mälzer once again went on a “Kitchen Impossible” mission.
But which program secured the most viewers?
Rating duel: “Polizeiruf 110” defeats “Neuer Wind im Altes Land”
The result is loud agf.de Clearly: “Polizeiruf 110” not only triumphed over “Neuer Wind im Altes Land” – with 7.517 million viewers and a market share of 26.6 percent of the total audience, the ARD crime series even took the day’s victory. “Neuer Wind im Altes Land” came in third place with 5.167 million viewers (18.3 percent). Apart from these two programs, no other primetime format made it into the top 10 for the overall audience.
The distribution looks completely different among 14 to 49-year-old viewers. Here Joko and Klaas took the gold medal (1.239 million/20.8 percent), bronze went to “Polizeiruf 110” (1.029 million/16 percent). And “Pirates of the Caribbean – On Stranger Tides” landed in ninth place. No other primetime format made it into the top 10 – not even “Neuer Wind im Altes Land”.
This is how TV ratings are determined
The ratings come from around 5,000 representative households, which are considered a “reduced image of all private households with at least one television set in Germany,” according to AGF Videoforschung GmbH, which is responsible for data collection and involves both ARD and ZDF as well as private-sector broadcasters and corporations involved. This data has been collected since 1963, although since 2016 only households in which the main income earner speaks German have been included.
The technical implementation is carried out using measuring devices that record sound signals on the television and compare them with the audio patterns of the television channels.
