Prime Minister resigns: What should happen next in Haiti?

Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who is stuck abroad, is not returning to his country and has announced his resignation. Now it is the turn of a presidential council.

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry has resigned after months of escalating gang violence and the collapse of state institutions. The Caribbean state, which suffers from political instability and great poverty, should find its way back to normality with international help.

At the weekend, representatives of the Haitian government, the opposition, business, civil society and religious groups met with leading representatives of the USA and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Below are the planned measures:

The Presidential Council: A Presidential Council is established to lead the return to democracy. It will be composed of two observers and seven voting members representing a broad spectrum of Haitian society. He is given certain presidential powers. The committee issues instructions by majority vote.

The tasks of the council: The council should appoint an interim prime minister and a cabinet. In addition, the Presidential Council should set up an election management team that will pave the way for the first elections in Haiti since 2016. CARICOM has not yet announced a date for when the Presidential Council will take place.

Members of the Council: The two non-voting members of the Presidential Council should come from the clergy and from civil society. The seven voting members are recruited from the business sector and political parties. The transitional bodies may not include members who have committed criminal offenses or who are affected by UN sanctions.
