RB Leipzig broke the streak of four consecutive defeats in the German Championship and got closer to the G-4 again by defeating Union Berlin 2-0, this Sunday, at the RB Arena, in the 20th round. Openda and Sesko scored the goals of the duel.
With the result, RB Leipzig finished the round in fifth place, with 36 points, behind Bayer Leverkusen (52), Bayern Munich (50), Stuttgart (40) and Borussia Dortmund (37). Union Berlin is 15th, with 17.
Seeking to rediscover their winning ways, RB Leipzig opened the scoring after just 11 minutes. Lois Openda received the ball in the face of the goal and shot with class to make it 1-0. Union Berlin’s response was only at 32. After the ball was sent into the area, Yorbe Vertessen rose alone and forced goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi to make a great save.
RB Leipzig had possession of the ball and created and pressed again in the final minutes. The home team had two more opportunities to extend the lead, the best of which was Benjamin Sesko with a clear header, but Alexander Schwolow made a spectacular save to prevent Union Berlin from going into the break even more at a loss.
In the second half, RB dominated the duel even more and found it difficult to extend the score. In the third minute, after a free kick, Sesko headed the ball into the goal. The same Sesko even made one more, at 13, but the move ended up being annulled by the referee, who ruled the move offside.
The home team continued with possession of the ball and mounted a comeback, nullifying the strengths of Union Berlin, who had Trimmel sent off in the 28th minute. As a result, they even tried to press, but were unable to avoid defeat away from home.
Also this Sunday, Wolfsburg (11th) and Hoffenheim (8th) drew 2-2 at the Volkswagen Arena. Majer, twice, scored for the home teams. Beier and Promel did it for the visitors.
