Brazilian justice has ruled: Robinho will have to serve a nine-year prison sentence in his country for gang rape, a sentence handed down in absentia in Italy and which could apply in the coming hours.
By a large majority of nine votes out of eleven, the magistrates of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) – including only one woman – decided that Robson de Souza, known as Robinho, could be imprisoned in his native country.
Appeals will be filed
The former international with 100 caps was found guilty in Italy of gang rape of a young Albanian woman who was celebrating her 23rd birthday in a Milanese nightclub. The facts date back to 2013. The ex-Seleçao and AC Milan star, aged 40 and currently residing in Santos, has always proclaimed his innocence.
As the Constitution of Brazil does not allow the extradition of its nationals, Italy requested in February 2023 that he serve his sentence in his native country. The magistrates did not judge the merits of the case, but only assessed whether the request from Italian justice was admissible. Robinho’s defense, however, appealed to the Supreme Court of Brazil to prevent him from being incarcerated.
