Sarpsborg, News alert | Fire in Sarpsborg: Man in his 40s dead

(Sarpsborg Arbeiderblad / Nettavisen): On Saturday evening, just before 10 p.m., the police received a report of a building fire in Greåker in Sarpsborg.

– It was a passer-by who had observed smoke, says operations officer at the police, Lisbeth Mjøsund.

Heavy fire

When the fire brigade arrived at the scene, there were no visible flames, but shortly after 10.30 pm, Sarpsborg Arbeiderblad’s photographer on the scene told that flames made their way through the roof.

Just ten minutes later, he could tell that there was a heavy fire in the building and massive smoke.

– The emergency services are on the scene. Building over two floors, there is smoke from the second floor and the attic. We ask neighbors to close windows and stay away from smoky areas, they write on X.

Perished

At 22:25, the police wrote that a lifeless person had been taken out of the building, and asked people to stay away.

A short time later, the police’s Lisbeth Mjøsund confirmed to Sarpsborg Arbeiderblad that the person who was taken out of the building was confirmed dead at the scene. It is unclear whether the death occurred in connection with the fire.

– We can’t say anything more about it than to confirm that the person is dead, said Mjøsund.

They spent the evening and night working on mapping whether there are more people living in the building, whether more people have stayed there and what caused the fire.

At around 02:00 on the night of Sunday, duty manager at the East 110 central Leif Høyland tells Nettavisen that they have finished on site.

– We gained control at the scene and the fire is now out. We have finished searching and have not made any further findings. The fire brigade has now left the scene, says Høyland.

Will continue to work on Sunday

Operations manager at the police’s operations center in East Kjetil Ringseth, tells Nettavisen on the night of Sunday that it is difficult to say anything about the cause of the fire.

– Technicians will arrive at the site on Sunday and will start work on mapping the cause of the fire, says Ringseth.

Early on Sunday morning, the Eastern Police District reports that the person who died is a man in his 40s. The police assume that the deceased lived at the address. The man must be formally identified before the police can confirm the identity of the deceased.

Relatives have been notified.
